Location: Binhaiwan New District, Dongguan Design Period: October–December 2023
Status: Competition Completed Project Type: Infrastructure
A corridor as light as a cloud floats gracefully above Binhaiwan Avenue, shaping a fluid skyline for the coastal bay area. Like a piece of land art, it draws people from all directions and creates a surreal urban scene.
Supported by an umbrella-like structural system, the semi-transparent flexible composite canopy provides a shaded, rain-sheltered urban “gray space” that enhances comfort during the summer. The space continuously transforms with sunlight and breeze, becoming a platform for daily activities and scenic viewing. From here, one’s gaze extends toward the sky, clouds, sea, and the vibrant pulse of urban life—inviting a sense of serenity and delight.
Beneath the canopy, a pedestrian platform composed of six interlocking circular rings of varying sizes and forms allows visitors to move along diverse paths. Beyond facilitating convenient circulation, these routes also extend into zones that interweave with projections, mist, and outdoor exhibitions—creating a flexible, adaptive public space that serves both people and the city, enriching the vitality of the site.
In addition to linking the four surrounding quadrants through pedestrian connections, the corridor further enriches each quadrant’s spatial experience: at the sports park end, it merges with terrain changes to form a gathering place for runners; along the Miaoyong Ecological Corridor, it provides a viewing deck overlooking the mangroves and waterways; at the Golden Coast seawall, jogging and cycling paths intersect and echo each other; and toward the Longmiao section, the path transforms into an ecological educational trail where citizens can closely observe tidal rhythms and mangrove habitats.
